From my limited knowledge of vfx (pretty much just from watching Captain Disillusion), I think that this was a one take with 2 balls. There was the ball that mark was holding at the start that he drops off camera and gets removed from the shot, and the ball we see floating is added in after the shot. The second ball is already attached to the stick and is held by the guy in the yellow shirt at the start who puts it into place in Mark's armpit while the other guy moves it around. At least that's my theory as to how it was done
